Ten Warning Signs of Alzheimer's Disease
- Memory loss. One of the first signs of Alzheimer’s disease.
Example: Individuals begin to forget recently learned information
- Difficulty performing familiar tasks.
Example: Losing track of the steps involved in preparing a meal, placing a telephone call or playing a game.
- Problems with language.
Example: Forgetting simple words or substitute unusual words, making speech or writing hard to understand. Example: They may try and ask for a glass of water and ask, “Can I have something for my mouth?”
- Disorientation to time and place.
Example: Forgetting familiar places like the neighborhood they live in.
- Poor or decreased judgment.
Example: This can range from dressing inappropriately to giving large sums of money away to friends, telemarketers.
- Problems with abstract thinking.
Example: Individuals may lose the ability to work with numbers or solve a problem.
- Misplacing things.
Example: putting things in unusual places: placing the milk in the dishwasher.
- Changes in mood or behavior.
Example: Rapid mood swings, from calm to tears to anger for no obvious reason.
- Changes in personality.
Example: They may become extremely confused, suspicious or dependent on a family member.
- Loss of initiative.
Example: Becoming very passive, sitting in front of the TV for hours, sleeping more than usual or not wanting to do usual activities.
