These facilities provide a way for older adults to live as independently as possible in a residential atmosphere with assistance and support. There are many types and sizes of facilities but they all generally provide meals in social settings and are staffed with people who can provide different levels of care with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) like bathing, dressing, and grooming and medication management.

Alzheimer's/Dementia

Provides specialized care tailored to the special needs of individuals with these diseases. Many specialized care units are secure areas located within an assisted living community. Alzheimer's disease is a condition which affects the brain and may result in loss of memory, mood swings, speech imbalance, and more. Advanced stages of this disease generally require 24-hour care. These facilities are state-licensed, long-term care facilities that offer 24-hour medical care provided by registered nurses (RN), licensed vocational nurses (LVN) and certified nurse assistants (CNA). These facilities also typically have short-term rehabilitation units. They also are required to have a house physician. This facility cares for frail residents who are dependent on nursing.

These communities are designed for older adults who can live independently. These can either be a simple apartments or thoe that offer meals, housekeeping, transportation, laundry services, and other convenient ammenities for residents. There are also many communities that offer both independent and assisted living on the same grounds.

Adult Day Care
A day care that provides a social environment and activities to accommodate the needs of both the physically and mentally challenged adults. They typically visit the centers 3-5 days per week from around 7-4. Most centers provide transportation.
Board and Care
Homes that are residential care facilities for the elderly and usually care for up to six residents. These communities can offer assistance with daily living such as bathing, incontinency care, medication management, and getting dressed. Although a board and care home can offer a high level of care including hospice care, they cannot offer skilled nursing services. If a family is looking for a smaller assisted living type of environment, a board and care can be a good option. They are also generally less expensive alternative to an assisted living facility.
Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC)
This community is commonly called Life Care. This lifestyle has Independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing all located on the same grounds. They offer a full selection of amenities associated with retirement living. A large entrance fee in addition to a monthly maintenance fee can be expected.
Respite Care
The purpose pf respite care is to give the primary caregiver a short-term break from their daily responsibility. This care is available in or away from the home.
Retirement Community
Communities that are designed for older adults who can live independently. These can either be a simple apartment or offer meals, housekeeping, and laundry services. There are also many communities in Southern California that offer both independent and assisted living on the same campus.
Senior Apartments
A low cost alternative to renting a general apartment. Most require age to be over 62. Many seniors sell their homes of many years and move to these apartment complexes to free up equity that can then supplement income trough interest and investments. The move also frees seniors from home and yard maintenance. For many living in a large complex of all seniors also gives them a greater sense of security than living in a private home.
